What you will learn
- Describe what a usable recovery plan needs.
- Separate a backup exercise from a live-wallet operation.
A second copy is only part of recovery
A backup is useful when it lets the right person restore the intended wallet after a realistic failure. A file you cannot decrypt, words you cannot read or a device whose password nobody knows may not achieve that. Start by identifying the wallet’s documented recovery method and what additional information it requires.
Different failures require different preparation
A lost phone, a stolen backup and a damaged home are different problems. Keeping every copy in one location can preserve convenience while retaining a shared failure point. Conversely, creating many uncontrolled copies increases exposure. There is no universal arrangement that fits every person. The important learning task is to articulate the failure being addressed and the new access each copy creates.
Practice with invented material
Create a paper recovery plan using labels such as Backup A, Device B and trusted contact. Do not generate or enter real recovery words in this course. Mark where wallet type, derivation information or an additional passphrase would be documented privately. A future real recovery drill must follow the wallet’s current instructions and use a controlled setup; it is not an excuse to type an existing secret into an unfamiliar website.
Practice on paper
A learner stores a device and its only backup in the same bag. Name two different ways that arrangement can fail and one question to improve the plan.
Reveal the worked answer
Loss or destruction can remove both; theft can give someone access to both. Ask how authorized recovery would work if the bag disappeared, without multiplying uncontrolled copies of spending secrets.
Check your understanding
Choose an answer in your head or on paper, then reveal the explanation. Retry whenever you like. Answers are not submitted or scored; completion marks are your own learning notes.
1. Does owning a backup guarantee it is usable?
- Yes
- No
Reveal answer 1
No. Readability, completeness and a tested recovery method matter.
2. Should a classroom instructor collect recovery phrases to check the exercise?
- Yes
- No
Reveal answer 2
No. Use invented labels; instructors never need real secrets.
Take this with you
A recovery plan should survive a failure without creating unnecessary exposure.
