What you will learn

  • List the terms a commission needs.
  • Separate artist payment and voluntary support.

Specify the work before the payment

A useful commission brief identifies the deliverable, dimensions or format, deadline, revisions and permitted uses. The price may be stated in sats or another agreed unit. A payment alone does not tell the parties whether a design may be modified, resold or printed commercially. Discuss those terms before issuing a request.

Keep the state understandable

BTCPay distinguishes an invoice awaiting payment from a payment waiting for settlement conditions and a settled invoice. An artist can use that distinction when deciding whether to begin or deliver work under their own terms. Partial, late and excess payments need deliberate handling rather than a vague paid badge. A manually marked status is an accounting action, not independent proof of settlement.

Do not hide the community contribution

Kalakar.x proposes a route for artists to receive BTC or Lightning payments using a verified arrangement. Any gift to Langar is separate and voluntary. A creator should understand fees and deductions before agreeing to a sale, and a buyer should know who receives the money. A portfolio page, payment tool and dispute process perform different jobs. This lesson is a mock commissioning exercise; it does not activate a marketplace or guarantee payment.

Practice on paper

Draft a one-sentence fictional poster commission with a price, deliverable, deadline and reuse term. What should happen if the invoice is paid late?

Reveal the worked answer

Example: “One print-ready poster for 30,000 sats, due Friday, with permission for the named event to print it.” A late payment needs review against the agreed terms and current invoice; do not automatically deliver or silently keep an unexplained difference.

Check your understanding

Choose an answer in your head or on paper, then reveal the explanation. Retry whenever you like. Answers are not submitted or scored; completion marks are your own learning notes.

1. Does payment alone explain copyright or reuse permission?

  • Yes
  • No
Reveal answer 1

No. The parties need clear terms.

2. May a community donation be silently deducted?

  • Yes
  • No
Reveal answer 2

No. Any fee or optional gift must be explicit and consented.

Take this with you
