What does the security actually represent?

Buying a security and holding native Bitcoin are different ownership arrangements.

  1. Underlying

Identify the asset or exposure the product references.

  2. Structure

Inspect custody, legal form, fees and redemption terms.

  3. Holder

Read the rights attached to the security you actually hold.

Before you concludeMatch the exact product, legal structure, issuer and prospectus.

A useful global register compares instruments before ranking them. The original design’s Top 21 is a coverage ambition, not evidence that twenty-one current rows have been independently reconciled.

The notebook / 01

Start with the instrument

Record the legal product name, issuer, identifier, domicile, listing currency, structure, fees and underlying exposure. One product may trade on several exchanges. Counting every listing as a separate pool can double-count the same assets.

An issuer’s assets under management, net asset value and units of bitcoin answer different questions. Preserve their distinct dates instead of putting them in a single unlabeled ranking.

Build an honest comparison

The daily issue contains a dated IBIT holdings record when its freshness gates pass. CoinShares is currently a product-reference source. These do not constitute a complete global ranking; the remaining rows need issuer-level reconciliation.

Saved observations are dated records, not continuously live values. Software releases retain their original publication dates. Holdings do not establish fund flows; rates and market access require separate current checks.

  • All 21 rows and their structure labels are transcribed from page 6. Source S04 ranks reported BTC balances within a retrieved tracker universe; exchanges and mixed-asset baskets were excluded.
  • This is a holdings-based proxy for physical exposure, not an exhaustive issuer-verified global AUM ranking. Liabilities, currencies and reporting dates can alter AUM order. Source labels are not verified legal classifications.
  • The reference tracker balance for IBIT differs from the separately collected issuer record used by this site. Those dates and methods are not synchronized.
